Movement urges West Australians to 'Un-junk' their communities

West Australians are being encouraged to take a stand against the growing influence of unhealthy food in their everyday lives through a new community movement launched by Cancer Council WA. Called Un-junk, the initiative is backed by a coalition of Western Australia’s leading health and medical organisations and aims to empower people to advocate for healthier food environments in their neighbourhoods.

Cancer Council WA Food Policy Senior Coordinator Dr Sharonna Mossenson said where people live, work and play has a significant impact on the food choices they make.

“Unhealthy food has become increasingly difficult to avoid, with fast food outlets near schools, junk food advertising in public spaces, unhealthy sponsorship in community sport, and supermarket promotions encouraging unhealthy purchases,” Dr Mossenson said.

She said children, in particular, are growing up surrounded by constant marketing and easy access to unhealthy food, making it seem like a normal part of everyday life.
