UN-JUNK OUR

SUPERMARKETS

IT'S TIME TO UN-JUNK.

Supermarkets should help fuel us, yet pricing and promotions are constantly pushing unhealthy food. Deep discounts and prime shelf space are shifting family food budgets away from everyday essentials. It's time to make better rules around price promotions in supermarkets and put families' health before supermarket profits.

WHY UN-JUNK OUR SUPERMARKETS?

Supermarkets influence what we buy and eat, yet the way food is priced and promoted doesn't encourage healthy choices.

At end-of-aisles, checkouts and online, price discounts and promotions overwhelmingly push unhealthy food, with more, bigger and better deals than those for healthier options.

These strategies are powerful. Price and location promotions drive impulse purchases, increasing spending on unhealthy products. Many West Australians report buying more unhealthy food than planned simply because it was 'on special'.

Governments need to regulate the competitive supermarket environment that puts profit before our need to purchase healthy, affordable groceries. We're working together to show them we're ready for healthier supermarkets.
